9|27|25 - Adventure Puppetry: Put on a Show!

Hello, creative adventurer! Have you ever wanted to tell a story with funny voices, colorful characters, and lots of laughter? Then you’re ready to step into the world of puppetry! Puppets aren’t just toys—they’re storytellers, actors, and adventurers, all rolled into one. Today, we’ll learn how to create your own puppets and put on a show!

Types of Puppets You Can Make

  • Sock Puppets – Old socks + buttons or felt = a silly talking character!

  • Paper Bag Puppets – Draw a face on the flap, glue on yarn for hair, and your puppet is ready to talk!

  • Stick Puppets – Tape a drawing or photo to a popsicle stick or straw.

  • Shadow Puppets – Cut out shapes from cardboard, tape them to sticks, and shine a flashlight to make moving shadows on a wall.

  • Finger Puppets - Finger puppets are tiny characters that fit right on your fingers. Each finger becomes a little stage actor, ready to play a part in your puppet show. They’re perfect for quick, silly performances!

Create Your Own Puppet Characters

Every puppet needs a story! Think about:

☑️ Who are they? A dragon? A dog? A superhero?
☑️ What do they sound like? High and squeaky? Deep and growly?
☑️ Where do they live? A castle, a forest, or maybe a kitchen cabinet?
☑️ What adventure will they go on? Finding treasure, saving a friend, or telling jokes?

Build Your Puppet Theater

You don’t need a stage—make one with:

  • A big cardboard box with a window cut out

  • A blanket draped over two chairs

  • Or even the edge of a couch to hide behind

Put On Your Show!

  1. Pick a story—make one up or use a favorite fairy tale.

  2. Practice voices and movements.

  3. Invite your family or friends to be the audience.

  4. Make it a group project—each person designs a puppet and they all go on an adventure together. Or try a “mystery play” where one person tells the story and the others act it out with puppets! Another fun activity is to perform a puppet who’s pretending to be a famous storybook character and see if the audience can guess!

  5. Try a “mystery play” where one person tells the story and the others act it out with puppets.

  6. Use music or sound effects (clapping, stomping, whistling) to make it exciting. Even use pots, pans, or shakers to make sounds for footsteps, thunder, or animal noises!

  7. Play background music (drums for adventure, flutes for magic) to set the mood.

  8. Kids can even record their own “theme song” for the puppet show.

  9. Take a bow when you’re done—you’re the star of the show!

Fun Puppet Facts

🔎 Puppets have been used for over 3,000 years—in places like China, Egypt, and Greece.

🔎 Jim Henson’s Muppets made puppetry famous on TV.
