What Is a Desert?
A desert is a place that gets very little rain each year. It may look empty at first, but guess what? Many animals and plants call the desert home! From buzzing insects to speedy lizards and even fuzzy foxes, the desert is bursting with life—especially in the early morning and evening when it’s cooler.
And hidden in some deserts are oases (say it like: oh-AY-sis)—cool spots with water, shade, and sometimes palm trees. Animals love to visit oases for a drink or a break from the heat!
Cool Creatures of the Desert
Let’s meet a few of the awesome animals you might find on a desert adventure:
Fennec Fox – With huge ears and a tiny body, this cute fox stays cool and sneaky in the sand.
Roadrunner – A fast bird that runs more than it flies (beep beep!).
Gila Monster – A bright orange and black lizard that stores fat in its tail.
Kangaroo Rat – Hops like a kangaroo and never needs to drink water—it gets it from seeds!
Camel – The king of desert travel with its hump full of fat to survive long trips.
Scorpion – Glows under blacklight and hides under rocks during the hot day.
Horned Lizard – Sometimes called a "horny toad," this spiky reptile can shoot blood from its eyes to scare away predators!
Desert Tortoise – Moves slowly and spends most of its time in underground burrows to stay cool. It can live to be over 80 years old!
Sidewinder Snake – Slithers sideways across hot sand, leaving cool “S”-shaped tracks behind.
Meerkats – These playful little mammals stand on their hind legs to watch for danger and live in big underground families.
Tarantula – A big, hairy spider that’s surprisingly shy. It only comes out at night and helps keep insect populations balanced.
Jackrabbit – With huge ears to release heat, this fast hopper can zoom away from danger in a flash!
Elf Owl – One of the smallest owls in the world, it lives inside holes in giant cacti and comes out at night to hunt bugs.
Wildlife Detective Tip!
Animals in the desert are really good at hiding. Look for:
Tracks in the sand
Nests in cactus holes
Rustling in bushes at dusk
Shadowy shapes moving when the sun sets
Many desert animals are nocturnal—they sleep during the day and come out at night when it’s cool. That’s when the real action begins!
Junior Desert Explorer Activities
Ready to explore the desert from home or on a trip? Try one of these fun activities!
🖍️ Make a Desert Diorama
Build your own mini desert using a shoebox, sand, small plastic animals, paper cacti, and cotton-ball clouds.
📓 Start a Wildlife Journal
Draw the animals you learn about and write fun facts next to them. Don’t forget to color them in!
🌅 Go on a Sunset Hike
If you're near a desert, take a short hike with an adult during sunset. That’s when animals start to wake up!
🎨 Paint a Cactus Rock
Find a smooth rock, paint it green like a cactus, and add white “spines” with a marker. Instant desert decor!
Did You Know?
A camel can drink up to 40 gallons of water at once!
Cactus flowers only bloom once a year—sometimes for just one day!
Desert temperatures can be over 100°F during the day and drop below freezing at night. Brrr!
Be a Water-Saver Hero!
Water is very precious in the desert. You can be a water-saving champion by:
