5|9|26 - Fire Safety & Campfire Building (with Adults!)
Hello, outdoor adventurer! There’s something magical about sitting around a crackling campfire under the stars—roasting marshmallows, telling stories, and staying warm on a cool night. But campfires are also a big responsibility, and learning how to build and enjoy one safely is an important outdoor skill. Today, we’re becoming Junior Campfire Helpers and learning the smart, safe way to build a campfire—with a trusted adult by your side!
Why Campfires Are Special
Campfires can:
Keep you warm on chilly nights
Help cook tasty food
Provide light after dark
Bring people together for stories and songs
But fire must always be treated with care and respect.
The Most Important Rule
Always Build Fires with an Adult: Children should never light or manage fires alone. A grown-up should:
* Choose the safe location
* Light and manage the fire
* Keep water nearby
* Make sure the fire is completely out afterward
Being safe is part of being a great adventurer!
Step 1: Pick a Safe Fire Spot
A safe campfire area should be:
🔥 In a designated fire ring or fire pit if available
🔥 Far from trees, tents, and dry grass
🔥 Clear of leaves and sticks nearby
🔥 Flat and open
Always check local fire rules and weather conditions first.
Step 2: Gather Fire Materials
Campfires need three kinds of fuel:
1 - Tinder
Tiny, dry materials that catch fire quickly:
Dry grass
Pine needles
Small bits of bark
2 - Kindling
Small sticks that help the fire grow.
3 - Firewood
Larger logs that keep the fire burning steadily.
Step 3: Build the Campfire
Adults often use one of these styles:
➡️ Teepee Fire - Kindling leans together like a teepee. Good for starting quickly.
➡️ Log Cabin Fire - Stacked logs with tinder in the middle. Burns steadily and evenly.
➡️ Star Fire - Logs point inward like a star. Easy to adjust while burning.
Fire Safety Rules for Kids
✅ DO:
Stay a safe distance from flames
Walk carefully around the fire
Keep sleeves and hair away from flames
Listen to adults at all times
❌ DON’T:
Run near the fire
Throw random objects into flames
Touch hot sticks, rocks, or metal
Leave a fire unattended
Remember: even ashes can stay hot for hours!
Step 4: Put the Fire Out Completely
When the adventure ends:
Adults pour water on the fire
Stir the ashes carefully
Add more water until everything is cool to the touch
If it’s warm, it’s not out yet!

💡 Campfires have been used by humans for hundreds of thousands of years!
💡 Different woods burn differently—some crackle, some smell sweet, and some burn longer.
